{Running Playlist}: Music and Solitude

I've been running and joining fun runs for more than a year now.  At the height of my excitement, I didn't really need anything except of course my running clothes and shoes.  However, as I got used to watching the same scenery, the runners who are practically strangers (except for my companions), the familiar start and finish lines, it came to be that running, even in a throng of people could sometimes feel like a solitary thing.  After all, you run for yourself, right?

Most times, when I run, I get lost in my thoughts.  Sometimes those thoughts are just trivial, pleasant memories, and sometimes, I get to do some real deep thinking.  They say running is a cheap form of therapy.  I have to agree.  And when I really want to be left alone to do some profound thinking, I'd like to tune out the rest of the world...the noise...honking of car horns, the clomping sounds of other runners, the chatter, the laughter...all of that.

And so I began to bring along my music player during my runs.  It's an effective way to tell people you want to be alone, and yet not to feel so alone with music blaring in your ears.  When I run, I only want to focus on four things: running, my thoughts, music, and road safety.  No talking.  Come on, when you're out of breath, do you still want to have a nice chit chat?  That comes after the run, when I rejoin my running buddies.  We don't actually see much of each other once we run as we have different pacing.

So before I get lost in my thoughts, I just like to share my new playlist.  Like I said, it's been more than a year and listening to this and this for quite sometime can get tiresome.  A shout out to Marie B., if you're interested in the songs...you know what to do lol!

So here's my new playlist, a mixture of praise and worship songs (the first 7 songs) and some pop songs down the line.  I started with praise and worship music...to remind me that it all starts with Him.  I worship, even as I run.

  • Our God (Chris Tomlin)
  • I Will Follow (Chris Tomlin)
  • Run (Hillsong)
  • Go (Hillsong)
  • Everyday (Hillsong/J Hogue) - can't get over this song, so it's still here
  • Open the Eyes of My Heart (Phillips, Craig & Dean version)
  • Search My Heart (radio version Hillsong United)
  • Titanium (David Guetta ft. Sia)
  • Still Into You (Paramore)
  • Roar (Katy Perry)
  • Sunday Morning (Maroon 5)
  • Daylight (Maroon 5)
  • Glad You Came (The Wanted)

I'll be having a Sunday morning run tomorrow.  How about you?  However you spend it, hope you enjoy your weekend everyone!

  5. I always run alone so I know what you mean. I would add Florence and the machine dog days as one of my favorite playlist songs. For the humor in it I also love Ingrid Michelson singing "all I can do is keep breathing". I'm attempting 10 miles for the first time tomorrow. Enjoy your run!

  9. I can relate with when you run you get yourself into deep thinking, in my case since I don't run, the time I get myself into deep thinking or get too absorbed in my thoughts is when I do the do the laundry manually..=)

  11. Music really uplifts one soul especially while running. Not only does it clear you head but your stamina is also strengthened when you listen to a tempo that is fast and upbeat.

Enjoy your run tomorrow and be safe A! Blessings.

  16. i love listening to praise and worship songs, too. hillsongs' one of my fave! that's a very nice list! and oh, i have to say this, i agree about what you said regarding running and feeling like it's a solitary thing. although I don't run now, back in the day when i was still mountaineering, running was one of my traning before a climb, and i do feel that way, too whenever i run. therapeutic at the same time. :-)

  35. Oh I think everyday is the Lord's day sis, just that Sunday is set apart, of course. My routine is to have an early morning run (6am), clean up and have breakfast, then go to church service. Wala pa naman kasi service at that time, so I kick off the day with a good run, and it's really energizing, all pumped up, tapos relax ka sa sermon (but not sleeping lol!)

  36. At some point sis, pinangarap kong maging member ng Hillsong, the Hillsong Australia in particular...heheheh wala lang. :-)

  39. I think I lack the discipline to run before the church service. Feeling ko makakatulog ako pagkatapos dahil sa pagod :D Actually hindi naman talaga ako tumatakbo, I was once dream to have a treadmill at home pero hanggang sa nakalimutan ko na lang yang pangarap na yan :D Honestly, tamad talaga ako :( I lack the determination to exercise. Kaya I really admire you for having a firm determination to run.

    ReplyDelete
  40. yes, aileen. i could do my practice on slow classical music too. :)
