I Heart Corn

I came from an early morning run just a few hours ago. It's a holiday today, so no work schedule. I took that opportunity to run, only wishing that I woke up even earlier and jogged at around 5am, when it is much cooler. I can't say that I had a blast, since the summer heat is really zapping my energy. I did manage to run for more than 30 minutes, well run-walk-run as always. I have not had the strength and stamina to run continuously for that length of time, and certainly not in that kind of summer heat.

After the run, we passed by a public market where we filled our stomachs with lugaw (congee) and boiled egg. It's not exactly the healthy post run meal but it's got carbs and protein, plus it's cheap so I couldn't really be choosy at that time. I just needed to fill my growling stomach that has only had water so far. I could eat just about anything that is edible at that time.

Going home, we also passed by some fruit stands. I was going to buy melon at first but I changed my mind when I caught sight of those drool-worthy corn on the cob. Running really amps my appetite hahaha!  If it were already cooked, I would have already munched on one cob on my way home.  Well, as it is, they're still raw so I'll boil them later for afternoon snack.

I don't know if it's just coincidence or I have an uncanny internal compass for loving foods that are actually beneficial to someone who has hypertension.  Most of the foods I love contain nutritional values that are great for my condition.  Just take a look at this (got it from How Stuff Works):

See?  It's got no cholesterol, has low sodium content and is high in potassium!  The article further explains the significant presence of folic acid that is also said to prevent heart disease by breaking down and therefore preventing the build up of homocysteine.  Elevated homocysteine is linked with heart disease.  In another article, it lists down some of the other good things about corn such as the presence of antioxidants, dietary fibers and vitamins that include the essential B-complex.

Wow, I could eat the 3 ears and I'm still good with the sodium limit, but I wouldn't do that of course.  Gluttony is a sin hehehe...and besides, sharing food is better, right? And not only better but healthier.

  1. Hello A ! There was a time when my kids and I had corn for breakfast and when I shared this to a community when I was just new blogging, a foreign blogger found it funny. Though I immediately deleted her name among the bloggers that I have followed, ( lol ) it did not diminish my preference for having corn for breakfast.


    I had a great time running 5k at the Good Housekeeping Fun Run. I was able to finish it in 40 minutes and 46 sec. It was my first 5k run straight from work with no sleep and whose preparation was only brisk walking and aero during weekends. Hope we could run together very soon.

  5. Woohoo! Congrats! Wow, it's hard to run without sleep...and at that rate, you are a better runner than me, considering that my best PR is 39 min and 30 sec with at least 6-7 hrs sleep prior to the run. On a side note, sis, have you already visited Curves?

  8. We have an abundant supply of corn these days. Just recently, we experimented and made our own corn soup at home. My daughter loved it. This is also our favorite snack -- boiled or roasted.

  10. I love corn too! I enjoy eating it boiled with butter when it's very hot and I love the aroma emanating from the pressure cooker indicating that it's cooked :)

  12. I love the one they called "Japanese Corn". It is a bit sweeter than the ordinary corn. I just wonder if these are also the sweet corn variety.

  14. I heart corn too! The problem for is I love it with a lots of butter. I have to congratulate you for sticking to your running despite the heat. I've been slacking off my workouts except for my badminton games. -Jellybelly

  16. I love corn too! May I ask, how much do you spend to run every morning if you have free time? I want to run as early as 5am too but I was so lazy pulling myself in bed at this time.. Give tips please! :)

  19. I think it's the same variety...yun nga lang, most of these are GMO's eh so not totally as healthy as we expect them to be. :-(

  27. Ahh healthy corn! But unless it's the sweet corn variety, i will always want to have it with butter and salt, like how you get them from the friendly neighborhood vendor. Hehe.
