Running With the Breeze

Seawall run, originally uploaded by lululemon athletica.

Last Sunday, I woke up really early as my running buddies and I agreed to meet at the office's main gate at 5:30 am sharp.  From there we'd go together to either the CCP Complex or Rizal Park for our run.  One of us (not me of course) woke up at 5:20 am hehehe.  The other one who was up and already waiting for us as early as 5 am wanted to go ahead already.  So, I was the middleman negotiating for a "let's meet halfway" truce.  The two of us who were early decided to fetch the other one at home and we'd take a ferry boat which would be faster than the route by land.  Well, all is well and we got to the bay area the soonest possible, that is almost 6:30 am if I'm not mistaken.

Normally, I would have preferred an earlier time when I could jog before the sun has fully risen.  I used to do that some years ago and I kind of miss that.  There's just something uplifting about running and feeling the sun gradually warming you up during the run. I'd be almost finished running by 7am.  Anyway, it's safer to jog with friends so I had to make that little compromise.

As we were crossing towards the bay area, we were greeted with a blast of strong, cool breeze.  Armed with my mp3 player that holds my running playlist, we started brisk walking towards Rizal Park.  I would have preferred the CCP Complex but I was voted out hehehe.  Maybe next time.  So anyway, the brisk walking soon turned to a slow jog until we got to that part of Rizal Stadium where there were so many runners already.  We continued pounding the pavement with an almost equal pacing.

Later on, one of my companions went to join one of the many aerobics groups shaking it up with the different beats.  While the aerobics groups looked kind of inviting, the remaining two of us continued to run.  My running buddy had more stamina for longer runs so a little later, I was already lagging but I resisted the urge to run faster.  I continued on my own pace and I timed myself with the songs I'm listening to.  Proud to say I can already run non-stop for 6 minutes and I have had shorter intervals of walking.  I followed the advise of one of the runner bloggers to only walk just to regain energy and then run again.  So yup, I was running more than walking this time.

At some point, I am running against the strong breeze and I would close my eyes for a short while, feeling like Rose on the deck of the Titanic minus the outstretched arms and a Jack hehehe.  The breeze is so invigorating, its cooling effect gave me more mileage in the run.  If it were sweltering hot, I wouldn't last for 10 minutes.  That's is why it is much better to run as early as possible when it is cooler.

That Sunday, I think we ran and walked for almost 45 minutes.  I felt like I could do that everyday.  And since Monday is a holiday, I thought we could run again.  Of course, I'm living on a fantasy or I was just so caught up in the excitement.  The following day, no running for my body is sore all over.  That's because the day before the run, I also tried some new exercises and the pain kicked in only on the afternoon of Sunday.  But that is the good kind of pain though, not the kind that makes you incapable of walking properly.  It's the pain you feel when you know you did a great exercise.

At the end of the run, I decided to reward myself with taho.  I passed by the vendor probably thrice already during the run and I said I would stop there.  Some steps ahead, I finally spotted my running buddy who was buying Pocari Sweat drinks for us.  I bought her taho and since they cost the same, we just swapped hehehe.

So to cool down after the run, we walked towards where we could get a ride, while finishing off the taho and then gulping Pocari to hydrate ourselves.  We promised ourselves to do this energizing activity on a more regular basis.

  3. Hehehe...ferry boat going to the backside of Sta. Ana Market only, then from there we take the jeepney going to Padre Faura...from there, we walked along Roxas Blvd going to Rizal Park...that part where they have the Ocean Park. Sorry, was just trying to make the long story short pati directions na shortcut lol!

  4. Hi, ooh, you should run here in Baguio (minus the rain though)Miss running outside na. On my way to church,I saw several people running in the rain (never tried that. I keep getting terrible thoughts in my mind, like, "if I slip or something and hit my head and will people help me or will they just leave me bleeding in the rain" thoughts).I like your playlist. Will share my playlist later hehe (my kids say it's time warp music, but hey, is Black eyed peas old???)

  5. I'd love to run in Baguio with all those pine trees looming and sunflowers on the sidewalks and fresh, cool air!...heaven!

Time warp? lol! Kids these days need to appreciate all kinds of music. I never liked classical before but now I do...think Vivaldi and Handel (I prefer them over Mozart)...As for Black Eyed Peas, well, they're old enough but not not ancient hahaha! I also appreciate some of their music. I'm just not much into rap.

  6. It's nice to run along Roxas Blvd and CCP. You see all these other people engaged in exercise and it spurs you on.

  7. I love your discipline. You are so inspiring. I've been lagging with my excercise because I had a lot of stressors lately and reading your blog kinda give me a push. Thanks so much :)

  8. Yup...I just have to resist running as fast as the more experienced runners do. I keep reminding myself to go easy and that time will come I will run faster and longer than they do, but now, I gotta take those baby steps first.

  9. At least you have it in your mind to do that...the running shoes can wait until you settle things.

  10. Thanks Lalah...but I am not rigidly disciplined...I have my lazy moments...I'm trying to build good habits for now...so that later on, it will not be so hard to move out of this inertia hehehe

  13. I remember having my jogging early in the morning where I need to bring a baton because of the dogs along the way - that was a long time ago. Hopefully I can do this again together with my children when they are a little bit older.

  14. That is why I cannot jog where I live because there are dogs...plus the smoke from jeepneys.

  15. if I have someone to go with me to jog-walk-jog I'd like to do it every morning.. More than a year ago I did alone but because other people started gossiping that I am seeing someone when doing my routine jog-walk-jog I decided to stop.

  16. That's too bad...some people really have nothing better to do in their spare time. Tell them to get a life hehehe....or invite them to jog with you lol!

  17. I've longed wanted to run for 30minutes at least but I can't seem to find a perfect place to do it here in downtown Cebu. It's freaking me out that almost at any time it happens that pickpockets with knives run after anyone. I'm thinking of relocating to the province in the future.

  18. Safety first, Itin. Besides you won't enjoy a run if you keep looking behind you and all around...

  19. remember, taho has high calories since it came from soybeans and with sugar in it. hehehe.
But I know, with that run, it was nothing compared to he calories that you burned. hehehe

    ReplyDelete
  20. Lol! That's true. But I haven't eaten anything before the run, not even coffee. I was running on an empty stomach. So a small cup of taho can be easily burned after that run. The body is still in calorie burning mode ( I think) :-)

  21. My husband and I used to jog every morning. That is when he joined our company's biggest loser version. Unfortunately, hindi namin napanindigan kasi we have to wake up as early as 5 in the morning and that our son sleep with us. But hopefully, like what I am always saying, we will have time for that.

  22. No pain no gain. It's when you feel it that makes you realize that your exercise is doing good to your body. I'm focusing on Hip Hop Abs right now, right at my home. :-)

  26. Well...good for you Aileen! I really admire your discipline. :) About that taho, yeah you're right, a small cup won't hurt. Besides, it has known nutrients, too right?

  27. I miss running!!! Hubby and I would take the kids to the sports center every weekend last summer. But due to the rainy season, we're unable to take the kids for a run.

  28. Way to go, Aileen! Doesn't it feel empowering to run with the breeze? I wish I could do that too. Now, I'm craving for some taho :). Yes you should run more often.
