Am I Ready to Run?

Few weeks ago, my colleague who has been joining fun runs in the past year has finally recruited us to sign up for one.  I was actually planning to join fun runs next year, when my body has really acclimated to doing more vigorous activities.  If I didn't have hypertension, I would have joined instantly.  I was kind of hesitant because of that, but with a little coaxing, I finally gave in and signed up for this:

Milo Marathon Packet : the bib and the singlet

If things go well, this will be my first time to join an event like this.  I'm used to just jogging by my lonesome, but there's always a first time.  Who knows, in the future, I might be collecting singlets like that above.  Right now though, I am prepping myself up.  I can't just wake up early on the day of the event that is on the 29th and proceed running.  Good thing I already started being more active.  Now, it's time to put things to the test.  I'll go easy on myself, of course.  After all, I am joining this not to win.  It's mainly for the experience, so I'll try to have fun.

I kind of missed running too.  The last time I ran for a longer time was three months ago, during our group conference at the company's beach house.  I ran from one end of the beach to the other.  Problem is, my jog turned into a full time sprint because a dog started to chase me.  People told me I should have stopped running but I was terrified of the dog.  Goodness!  At least the dog wasn't so determined to get to me.  But it was quite an effort to run on sand!  If that would qualify as a measure of fitness, then I suppose I am ready for the fun run.

Seriously, I am reading up on tips for beginners.  I've found a lot of materials for that actually and here are some links you might want to check on if you're just starting the running program like me.

Well, as they mostly advised in the articles, one must invest on a good pair of running shoes.  I have rubber shoes, but not really the pairs designed for running.  So I bought myself a pair yesterday and here's hoping these shoes will be used a lot for what they're intended for...running of course! And I got these for the marked down cost!

My new pair of Adidas

Just perfect, since I am not yet ready to delve into the technicalities of running shoes, gait analysis and the likes.  Nothing too fancy for a beginner like me.  What's important is that the shoes feel comfortable and they provide ample shock absorption, pretty much the basic stuff.  I'll get to the technical details when I am already into real marathons.

So to answer my question...am I ready to run?  I suppose so...but there's one more thing to do.  Silly me, I haven't consulted my doctor yet lol!  But I'm sure he'll give me the go signal.  I can feel it in my bones that I can do this, even if it's way ahead of my initial plan.  Well, 16 more days to countdown.  This is it!

  6. Hi Aileen! It's good that you are joining this fun run. My greatest frustration in life is not being able to pick up any sport. weak kasi ang katawan ko when I was still young especially nung nasa elementary ako. That's why I'm not really into sports. Happy that you can find ways to live up with your goals of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. :)

  23. Running is always consider as healthy but in your case that you have hypertension hope it will be fine. I do run before but can't do it now, because of my hypertension. I just do walking and in gym once in awhile. BTW: I love your shoes, we have the same brand Adidas.. Goodluck to your goal sis.

  24. 16 days to prepare for a 5K run? You better start walking/jogging atleast 1K everyday starting today. I've never joined a run for more than 3K precisely because I don't run that often. I'd probably faint if I ran 5K. LOL! I wish you well on your run. :)

  25. Running shoes! Good investment. I am participating in fun runs too. And I've invested in Skechers Shape Ups. Love them! Congratulations, btw!

  26. I meant 16 days to go before the run (as of now it's 9 days to go)...but I have started my preparations at least a month before the run... and before that, I've been exercising more often and walking a lot :-)

  27. Thanks for the words of encouragement...I'll survive this :-) I'm trying this out to see how I fare...I realize it's not going to be run all the way...more of run-walk-run lol! I'll do my best not to take out the fun in fun runs :-)

  28. Go for it! Running is good for the health. You are lucky that there are events like that in your place. Where I am right now, it's very seldom, so we are content with the treadmill.
    Have fun

  43. Bee, I have seen those shoes. Hihihi I feel weird wearing that kind of shoes but they say for those who want a barefoot running experience, that is a good one. However, for a beginner runner, I need the extra padding of regular running shoes. :-)

I envy you for experiencing this fun run sis! When can I ever do that, for sure in my dreams, lol! They say new shoes wont make you comfortable in running for the first time, especially the 5k run but then again, you said it's comfortable so I presume you had the fine run. Looking forward to your next post regarding your experience with the 5k fun run, sis! Congratulations, you did it! By the way sis,the dog likes you, lol!
